Communication tools for social change

The International Journalist Network and the Newcomer Advocacy Committee are please to organize this Round Table to share experiences and ideas around effective communication tools for community work.

The panel includes well known internationally trained journalists that combine their journalistic expertise with initiatives in community work. Our panelists are:

Gilberto Rogel. Community strategies in communication.
Fredy Velez. Written press and community work
Fabian Merlo. Advantages of the use of radio in community work.
Oswaldo Mesquita. Experiences in community TV.
Ciro Alquichire. The use of Internet in community work.
Moderated by Anna Jover. A Spaniard journalist relocated to Toronto, administrator of the community chorus “Common Thread” and member of the International Journalist Network.

Summer camp for newcomer youths

If you are between 13-21 years old and new to Canada this summer camp may interest you.

If you want to make new friends,  explore your talents and express yourself, this 5 days summer camp is a good way to get to know more about corporal expression and theater; boosting your confidence and helping you to overcome fears and shyness. After a week full of activities and fun, you will have a new perspective about art and theater.

If you want to take this experience a step further, a new theater group will gather every week starting in September 2011. There are possibilities to work in the production of a piece that combines theater with dance and movement, and make public performances. The time invested in rehearsals can count as community hours for high school.

Free Yoga classes this summer

Relax and find your balance with our weekly yoga classes.

Yoga is a millenary Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline that combines breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures known as asanas to achieve relaxation, detoxify and strengthen the body and increase focus and energy.

New Voices magazine is looking for writers

The Mennonite New Life Centre is currently recruiting internationally trained journalists to contribute to the fall issue of our New Voices magazine. In the Fall 2011 issue, we wish to explore a people’s agenda for Ontario, in the context of the October provincial election. For more information, please see  our invitation to writers.
This is an excellent opportunity for internationally trained journalists/writers interested in social and political issues, who would like to see their work published in Canada. Applicants should submit:
• Two samples of your written work in English (published/unpublished);
• A copy of your resume outlining your journalistic and/or writing background;
• A statement of interest that describes:
1) why you are interested in writing for New Voices and
2) which of the four key issues you would be most interested in writing about and why, together with one policy proposal to government in relation to this issue.

Citizenship Program in Scarborough

If you need to prepare for your Canadian Citizenship Test, of if you want to learn more about Canada, join our Citizenship Fall Program starting this September 12, 2011.

This is a program of 7 weeks (every Monday from 2:40 am to 3:40 pm) in which we will cover the following topics:

  • Canadian Geography and Economics
  • Canadian History
  • Canadian Culture and Values
  • Canadian Political System and Government

Each week a new topic will be covered, in a format that combines presentations and group activities.

Youths in Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Grant

The Mennonite New Life Centre is pleased to be one of the 120 charities beneficiaries of the Youth in Philanthropy Initiative Grant 2011, and initiative sponsored by the Toskan Casale Foundation.

A group of students from the Brebeuf College in Scarborough nominated the Mennonite New Life Centre of Toronto after studying the social needs of their community. They selected the centre based among other factors in our mission and impact on the community.

Finally, the students prepared a 10 minutes presentation of the Mennonite New Life Centre after visits to our organization where they had the opportunity to know firsthand about our programs and listened to our participants and staff. A big thank you on behalf of the Mennonite New Life Centre of Toronto!!
